A modern residence in an historic place
MG01-32
This magnificent residence is located in the surroundings of the medieval fortress of Kassiopi, just opposite the most northern coast of the island. Due to such a distinctive and historic location, the fundamental concept underlying the architectural design was based on the essence of remembrance and emotion that life around a fortress can exude. This is none other than the concept of safety and refuge. The aim is to create a “building envelope” that has the ability to “open up” to the sea view and the landscape, whereas can also turn ‘inwards’ when conditions or the mood calls for it. Sliding panels of vertical timber elements help to achieve this objective. Another distinctive feature is the vertical and horizontal timber elements that act as a “mask” on the blind facades of the building, where it is not covered by ground.
The house is arranged in two levels with separate sections, two undercut spaces and a ground floor, embedded in the rear side of the property. One of the two undercut sections incorporates a swimming pool, which is not authorized to be on display, due to the historic value of the site. The architecture of the building is simple and modern with cubic volumes and large glazed windows. The selection of geometry and materials has been made to contrast and highlight the adjacent stone walls of Kassiopi’s fortress, seeking simultaneously a harmonious and peaceful coexistence.
